IIPT Indian Ocean Islands Chapter

Peace through tourism across the islands of the Indian Ocean

IIPT Chapter ยท Mauritius and the Indian Ocean islands

Islands connected by peace

Based in Mauritius, the Indian Ocean Islands Chapter brings IIPT’s mission to island communities whose economies, cultures and environments are closely tied to tourism.

The chapter grew out of IIPT’s partnership with the World Airline Clubs Association (WACA), which set out to form an IIPT Indian Ocean Chapter focused on reducing poverty in the islands. By 2003 it was one of IIPT’s three established chapters, with the Caribbean and Australia.

Its President, Maga Ramasamy, has been part of the IIPT family since the 2nd Global Conference in Montreal in 1994, when he was Secretary General of WACA; he later became WACA’s President. Today the chapter works with airlines, hotels, tour operators, universities and NGOs to make island tourism responsible, resilient and a force for peace.

“The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has identified 3 SDGs where the word tourism is included but if you go through the other 14 SDGs, it is clear that tourism, since it is the most dynamic sector with global reach, makes an important contribution to the achievement of the SDGs in general.”
